The countdown for World cup Cricket is started and Sachin Tendulkar has been appointed as the official event ambassador for next year’s Cricket World Cup by the International Cricket Council on Thursday.With a hundred days to go, the Master Blaster in his role as ambassador will be called upon to support and promote a couple of ICC initiatives for the 2011 World Cup, which will be held in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and India from February 19 to April 2. "There are just a hundred days to go and I am really looking forward to playing in another Cricket World Cup. In terms of limited-overs cricket, the ICC Cricket World Cup is the highest level you can play so it is always a thrill to take part in such an important and widely followed event," reflected Sachin, who will join Pakistan's Javed Miandad as the only other man to play in six World Cups.
The right handed batsman, who made his One Day debut back in 1989 versus Pakistan, is the leading run scorer and century maker in Test as well as One Day Cricket. The Bombay born is also the only contender to score a One Day double century in the rich history of international cricket.
Three years ago, Shane Warne, a leg spin bowler from Australia, named Sachin as the greatest player he ha
s ever played during the month of September. The five feet five inches Sachin passed 30,000 runs in the ODI cricket last year in November. He has been awarded with India’s second highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan as well as the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, which is India’s highest sporting honour.
While commenting on his recent appointment as the ambassador for the next year’s World Cup, the God of cricket declared, "The fact that the 2011 competition will be staged here in the Sub-continent makes it even more special for me and I am keen to ensure we play well.
As a team we would be doing everything we can to win the world cup on home soil”.
Haroon Lorgat, who is the chief executive of ICC, also added that he feels lucky to have an extraordinary player like Sachin from India, who will also support the biggest cricketing event next year in the Sub-continent.
